Planet of the Apes, Animal Welfare at its Core

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with James Franco, comes to DVD today.  I've always enjoyed a good Sci - Fi especially ones that involve animals.  I love seeing how different our world can be because of science, radiation or the unknown crashing into our planet.  Rise was awesome!  I really liked the way they built up the storyline and the ending was fantastic.  My mind knew the animals were CG but I still had a hard time watching certain scenes.  This movie really makes you think about what animals go through in their own private existance and how we affect them.

Rise really got me thinking about a few topics:

Disney's Spooky Buddies - Halloween Barktackular!

Amanda Jane with famous actor B - Dawg.

At BlogPaws this year Disney let us have the exclusive sneak peek of Spooky Buddies.  After the movie we got the inside scoop on the film form the producer, Robert Vince.  His movies include: The Search for Santa Paws, Snow Buddies, and MVP: Most Valuable Primate to name a few. When you hear him talk it's obvious Vince is passionate about making animal films. I have watched and love many children's movies, especially the old hand drawn cartoons.  Disney films are a common household commodity and one of my all time favorites is The Ugly Dachshund.  Of course I'd heard of the Buddies collection but somehow I'd never watched one.  I totally get the Buddies phenomenon now.

The 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11 is almost here.  That was the day that made me completely understand why my mother would say, " I remember exactly what I was doing when Kennedy was shot."  I can tell you exactly how my day unfolded from the moment it started.  When the anniversary arrives and the media begins to remind us of the tragedy, I cannot help but cry for the survivors and for the the lives we lost.  It's amazing how people and animals rally to a cause.  Dogs in particular come to mind.  Unearthing piles of rubble till they are dehydrated and have cut pads, they seem to work effortlessly usually only stopping when their handler insists.  The hero dogs of 9/11worked for days on end to find survivors and the bodies of loved ones that needed to be placed to rest.

Tails on the Trail with Amanda Jane and Roscoe

Img_0389
Saturday May 7, 2011 in Independence was all about the dogs.  It was Tails on the Trail day so Roscoe and I arrived early enough to get some pancakes and sausage.  We had to get our carbs in before the walk.  Pancakes also double as a great incentive for Roscoe and my son to behave.  There was music and a small Arbor day celebration going on down at the square.  After breakfast we enjoyed the variety of people and their dogs who came out.  The Kansas City Sheltie Rescue group was there with some sweeties for adoption.  I thought their shirts were clever telling you exactly what a sheltie was.  I even committed some to memory: Yes I am a shetland sheepdog, no I am not a miniature collie, yes I'm a house dog, No I don't like strangers. I thought that was a great way to explain quickly if these dogs are a match for you.  Everyone was in great spirits and we should be.  Promoting spaying and neutering is a good thing and so is helping the Independence Animal Shelter get funding.  Animals deserve dignity and respect through all stages of life. A shelter that has funding is able to provide comfort while animals are with them.  I've always enjoyed comparing dogs and their owners.  It was awesome seeing the walk start with about 100 people and 50 dogs walking in a giant mass. We joined in at the end because I figured like the pioneers the wagons should be in the back.
